We were doing some photography for friends of Wolf's parents the other day. We have some costumes for girls to do pictures in and most of them are sleeveless. MIL's friend was freaking out over the lack of sleeves on the costumes. She actually said, "Now go change in the bathroom because I know you're a modest girl." To a FOUR YEAR OLD! It made me cringe. (The irony is that the little girl's mom was totally OK with changing her toddler son into a costume where everyone could see. No one batted an eye over that.) And she kept going on and on about how she buys only the dresses with sleeves for her dance students because they're more modest. AAARRRGGGGHHHH! I hate living in Utah where people think sleeves=salvation!

Wolf was really disappointed about those comments because the pictures were just beautiful and the little girl was having so much fun. He did pictures for a woman who wore her garments under a costume and he had to paint out the garments (you can't tell they were ever there though anyway now that he's done). But it's just super annoying. We want to move out of Utah so badly right now and we're working towards it, but it's just frustrating at the moment. That poor little girl is going to grow up thinking that unless she's wearing sleeves she's 21st century Jezebel. OK, I got it out of my system.

Perhaps you'll want to look westward. We have two clothing optional beaches in Oregon and I'm noticing today a few pink blossoms on my neighbor's tree so it'll not be long 'til we'll be heading out for a little sun, sand and vitamin D.

Have you though about moving to Texas. Also there are three nudist resorts down here in the Lone Star State one of which I am a member of that allow vistors to use their facilities but you have to pay 20 dollars.

It is the dearest wish of our hearts to move some place like Oregon or Texas. We've actually talked about both of those areas. But unless someone out there has an attic/basement/garage apartment with its own kitchen and will allow two well-behaved dogs, not to mention waive/trade rent for 1-2 months as we are getting going with our business, I don't think we'll be going anywhere a little while. We're getting on our feet, but can't afford to pay rent or deposit for a couple of months, so the only option we can see right now is staying put and fighting on. I'll certainly welcome any prayers that go towards us moving out though. =)

Reality is you will find that mentality even out side of Utah. The big benefit would be the distance from the MIL. I know how that goes, we ended up putting over 2000 miles between me and my MIL. Needless to say I have not even talked to her for many years, not even on the phone as the last time did not go well. Not that I'm too disappointed. Even the wife won't talk to her that often. She would be much the same way about dressing if given the chance.

Bodily decay is gloomy in prospect, but of all human contemplations the most abhorrent is body without mind.

I'm sorry. I don't think that I can do that. I would make a guess that all of us here in Utah were hoping to get to meet you and Wolf in person some day. That would be difficult if you move to Oregon or Texas.

Oh, well if that's all that is holding us back from moving out of state then I'll throw a going away party and invite you all this weekend. Here at my MIL's house. NO CLOTHES FOR ANYONE! (J/K) =)

Saw the topic title and immediately thought "Can I really live anyplace else?"

Of course, I've been reading "Uranium Daughter," which is set in 1961 Moab and Hanksville and Capitol Reef and the San Rafael Swell, etc. (Not a very good novel, otherwise, but I got the Kindle edition for free.) The thing that brought me back to Utah (other than my aging parents) was simply how empty most of it is and how varied.

But I see that that's the real difference between my situation and yours, bunny_slippers. You have to deal with people (and that's what your post is really about) and I avoid them as much as I can. For years, I've worked at home (as a programmer), taken my days off in the middle of the week when I can go nude in most places in Utah without seeing anyone, and I avoid (like the plague) news of Utah politics. Or of much else.

MILs. I've had two and both of them were wonderful. How can yours be so bad and your spouses not suffer from it? Or is that your complaint?

(Another reason I moved back to Utah is so that some of my jokes would be understood -- e.g. Adam-omdi-Ahman. Imagine my chagrin when they were not.)

Well, my in-laws have certainly shaped Wolf, however, we have started living an extremely divergent lifestyle from the in-laws. About the only thing we have in common with MIL is being active in the Church. She is the most Mormon Republican you could possibly meet (and shares every detail of Mitt Romney's divinely appointed presidential campaign 24/7) and we're now Libertarians. She eats meat three times a day and we eat mostly raw vegan (and we share a kitchen). She would prefer a burka and we sleep in the nude. (Not that she knows that.) When we were first married, Wolf was a mama's boy and now he's grown up. And I have too. I realize that there are always going to be body shame types anywhere you go, but it is kind of an institution here in Utah. You don't see "modest" dress billboards in any other state that I've been to.

Is there a context for that Adam-ondi-Ahman thing? Am I missing something? Am I one of those born and raised Utahns that don't get your jokes?

Well, I'm basically in "Utah, northern edition" here in Idaho, but while I seem to have escaped notice of the "modest" dress billboards (We seem to get the anti-Mormon "Feeling Worthy?" ones instead, although I'm not sure why the Evangelicals putting them up feels that message is particularly anti-Mormon, only reason I'm aware of that was a newspaper article on the "anti-Mormon ad campaign" when they first went up). We DO, however get the radio advertisements for "Modest Bride" and other such iterations of "Modest _____" on certain stations. So it's out there in my local area, just not on our billboards near as I've seen.

Now billboard ads for intimate apparel, we have many of those, and the owner for that chain is a Mormon too last I heard. :)

Bunny, although I would have a hard time turning down an invitation to an all nude party (I have never been to one), that is not what I meant by saying that I was hoping to get to meet you and Wolf in person some day. My fantasy is that someday, all of the schedules of everybody that lives in Utah, will somehow work out that we can have a great big gathering, in a public park, fully dressed, and discuss face to face, this thing called Mormon nudity.

Oh, by the way, I did pray for the two of you, both last night and again this morning, that you can get on your feet and get this business up and running smoothly. It just seemed a little strange, praying for Wolf and Bunny Slippers. We haven't met yet and I don't know your names .

I think the thing that annoyed us the most about the situation is that the woman is a dance teacher and the dresses we have actually have more coverage than a "typical" leotard. I agree that these attitudes prevail outside of Utah but there are certainly a lot of people here who have some pretty crazy notions concerning what modesty is. But I know everyone here is no stranger to that. The shocker for me with the dance situation is that the entire point of dance is the beauty of the body's movements so you want to see the body and that the supposed "gold standard" (note the sarcasm) of modesty - BYU - even uses leotards for dancers that are sleeveless. I think too many people see modesty and body shame as being synonymous and that really saddens me.

I would love to meet everyone face to face. I was saddened to see we just missed the president's day meetup as we probably would've gone (except we're pretty picky about what we eat so probably wouldn't have eaten much). I've been MIA from this forum for a while as I've been too busy getting my business going to have time here. Thanks for your prayers. Things are actually going really well. As with all great endeavors, there are plenty of speed bumps and frustrations along the way.

My wife has only ever lived here in Utah. I've only lived here a bit longer than we've known each other. Personally I think the title of this thread should read "I hate super crazy, nazi, cultural mormons who we keep finding here in Utah!" as I'd say that more accurately describes our sentiment, but I understand my wife's frustrations and longing for living somewhere else and I'm working crazy hard to make it happen ASAP!

Wolf and Bunny,

I assume when you speak of Utah, you're talking about the one that starts in Provo and ends in Ogden? If so, you just need to escape the epicenter of "super crazy, nazi, cultural mormons" by either moving, which sounds unlikely or ignoring, a bit harder but very possible.

I'm in another state called "Southern Utah", it's different, in a good way, mode diluted, I guess.

Believe it or not, I actually pray for most of you out here on this forum, on a semi-frequent basis. As far as intolerance is concerned, I take comfort in the fact that "there is a reason for everything" - the way people act, react, think, etc., is conditioned upon prior experiences. That is why the Lord has said "line upon line, precept upon precept; here a little, there a little..." As I've recounted elsewhere on this forum, when Joseph Smith told Brigham Young "If I told you everything I know about the Celestial Kingdom, you'd call me a fallen prophet and then apostatize" to which BY replied "Then don't tell me!" Wouldn't it be interesting if one of "those things" was a clothing optional Celestial Kingdom? How shocking would that be to some of our more conservatives?!! Again, I think it behooves us all to have patience and long suffering (emphasis on suffering!!) in dealing with our fellow brothers and sisters, and mankind in general. Anyway...

Just my 2½¢ worth...
